Ta for the recommendation! I'll have a look.

The Boy and the Heron is a potent brew containing similar elements from Miyazaki's previous work: Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo. It was too much for me to digest compared to those predecessors, a sensory symbolic overload, but that's OK because its surreal beauty is persistently marvelous.

Furiosa surprised me. It was entertaining and very well done. I didn't enjoy Fury Road at all, so expectations were low.

Once again I am pleasantly surprised that there is still any milk left in the cow called "Planet of the Apes". "Kingdom" was very enjoyable. Nothing beats the 1968 original of course.

"Alien:Romulus". Thrilling, well made, great pacing and scary moments. It no longer has the vibe of arthouse originality, like the original and, less successfully, "Prometheus". It's more popcorn fodder nowadays, but at least "Romulus" is done well. Also, the popcorn trope of throwing in a cachphrase (get away from her you BITCH") still works for me.

Heretic is a good movie/thriller starring Hugh Grant.

"Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse in the house of a strange man."

This week I watched the remake of Nosferatu. It didn't quite work on me, but it had some excellent bits in it. I will go back and re-watch the Herzog version from the 70s and also Andy Warhol's Blood for Dracula, which I remember fondly.

Then last night I got around to watching "Mad God" which is a surreal arthouse cult animation. I really enjoyed it, it reminded me of being young and pretentious and going to see Koyaanisqatsi, 2001, Robot Monster, that sort of thing.

I watched this on Friday and i thought it was pretty shit, to be honest. 2/5 from me. It wasn't really scary and the philosophy 101 stuff was a bit lame, but the actors were great, they did their best and there were a few tense moments. I like Hugh Grant too, i think he's an underrated actor, but this missed the mark for me.

Horror is my favorite genre, i don't know why, but i'm a harsh judge. When hollywood or big studios come out with a hyped up horror movie there's precedent to predict it will be disappointing. The best recent example of that was Black Phone, with Ethan Hawke. Probably one of the worst movies i've seen in the last 5 years, i gave it zero out of five.

I'm not sure big studios with big budgets can do horror because good horror, imo, does not appeal to the mass market. They always have to dumb it down, soften it all and fall back on tropes and conventions to attract a big audience.
